Tomato Time~

It’s September and if you are a gardener in upstate New York , you know what that means…you are being (hopefully!) inundated with tomatoes!!!  I love it, and I look forward to this all year.  This year has been, by far, my most successful year for tomatoes.  I’m not sure what to attribute that to, but at least part of it had to be the weather.  I think another factor was that I purposely sought out disease resistant varieties when I bought my seeds.

This year, I planted Sugary, Mater Sandwich, Beefy Boy, and Golden Rave. They have all done well, and every couple of days, I get a nice little harvest like this one that I picked on Tuesday morning.

When I was a kid, I spent countless hours helping my mom to can Chili Sauce with my Dad’s prize tomatoes.  As an adult, I’ve been canning once again for the past four years (and gardening for about 5 years) , and I realized last night that I had not yet made any  chili sauce.  So, in honor of my late parents, I was up until midnight making and canning a batch of delicious sauce.  The jars look really nice, and this is going to be so tasty over the winter!

Of course, with the abundance of tomatoes, I’ve also been canning them just as they are.  These can be used in sauces or any other recipes you would use canned tomatoes in…or, they are tasty right out of the jar. As kids we used to sprinkle a bit of sugar on them. I don’t think I would do that now.

Are you doing any canning or gardening?

Oh Terry you make me feel lazy. Gordon has an abundance of veggies back in AB. But I’m still in BC and have no garden here. He has so much he’s giving it away and making stew to freeze for winter. So I will enjoy later! So will you!

No garden for me this year. The company I work for has been working us to death with 7 and 6 day weeks and 12 hours a day. 😦 The neighbor has a peach tree and gave me all the peaches on it and when I get all the peaches he is cutting it down. I have canned a few jars of jam.
Going to make a peach pie or cobbler today. (I called in at work because my car is making a funny sound and I need to take it in)
